Together let's Grow a better world
My name is Dr. Deborah Chabi.
I recently finished a Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point in the Educational Sustainability program. My research interest is in Indigenous Science education and Traditional Ecological Knowledge . Learning history of all Americans and adhering to science are some of my core values.
As an educator and lifelong learner I am always seeking to learn and grow in new roles and am excited to represent my friends, neighbors, colleagues, and former students as your Kane County Board 21 representative.
The classes I have taught are Environmental Science, Zoology, Biology, and Physical science at the high school level. Before I taught high school I was a pre-k educator for several years. Being a pre-k teacher informed the way I teach at the high school level and the way I treat my students. Learning by playing and being open to making mistakes is the best way to go about learning science. Science is dynamic and systemic. Learning happens in stages and chunks in the brain.
Organizations I am part of
- Friends of the Fox River - Education Committee
- East Dundee Arts Council Committee Member
- East Dundee Saint Patrick's Day Annual Parade Committee--> Money raised from the parade and 5K go to Friends of the Fox, FISH food pantry, and D300 food pantry.
- Valley of the Fox Sierra Club
- Environmental Education Association of Illinois
- North American Association of Environmental Education
- Founding member and former VP of GLEAMS
Volunteer events
- Duke's Blues and BBQ
- Summer Camp at Schweitzer Environmental Center for Boys and Girls club with Friends of the Fox
Participants engaged in a year long journey that examined the roots of racial and social injustice, practiced personal reflection, built relationships with like minded educators and began working to build just schools and communities throughout Illinois. I participated in Leaders for Just Schools for 4 years and also did the Loveworks Book study where we read books by Dr. Bettina Love and had the chance to hear them speak.
As someone who lives and has taught in the Fox River Water shed it is paramount that it be protected for future generations of all living things.
